SAE Visit #1: Grocery Store

As most of us know, the three components of agriculture education are classroom/laboratory, FFA, and SAE. Last week I had the chance to go on an SAE visit to one our FFA officers job in the local grocery store. The student uses this as an employment SAE project as he works every weekend and enters his hours and paychecks into AET.

Below are some pictures that I took, questions that we asked, and new information I learned while at this SAE visit.

The student who works at the grocery store is tasked with restocking shelves, the frozen food section, aiding customers, and other jobs the manager passes along to him. He has flexible hours as he is on the wrestling team for the school. In the picture above I learned a new piece of information. I never knew that there was a line in the frozen food bunker that determined how full to fill it. If it is filled above the line, the freezer cannot keep up with the amount of food in it. Just a tidbit of information that I though was really cool. Some other questions we asked bout restocking was how often he does it, how much of each product is supposed to be stocked, and how often deliveries are made to the grocery store.

While we were at the grocery store, we were able to see our student restocking the frozen foods section, specifically the breakfast foods. It was neat to see how he decided how to display different products and how much of each to put out based on his experience of how fast the food gets sold.

This student is a junior and will be applying for his Keystone Degree next year. Thus, he is trying to stay up-to-date with his record book so that it will be very easy to fill out the application on AET. I really enjoyed this first visit and look forward to seeing the other projects that my students have.
